Next came the practical "butcher block,” a sturdy worktable made from solid wood that was placed in the center of the room. It became a characteristic bulthaup trademark. As a bold statement providing a communication and work hub, it changed the whole kitchen space.
Under the new management of Gerd Bulthaup, bulthaup unveiled the "kitchen workbench” in 1988, an element that combined for the first time all the key working areas of the kitchen on one functional level (cooktop and water point). The media hailed this the first real innovation since the Frankfurt kitchen. Equally, system 25 in 1992 and system 20 in 1997 were also seen as a revolution in international kitchen design.
